December 1862 was bitter cold. Archaeologists used the newly protected acreage to unearth dropped Enfield cartridges and horseshoe nails. This evidence proved that the fighting was much more fluid and chaotic than official reports suggested. The expansion kept the historic viewshed intact, too.
