Conde McCullough did not just build bridges. He obsessed over how they fit into the coastal fog. Before 1936, drivers heading down Oregon's wild coast hit a dead end at Newport. You had to wait, sometimes for hours in the rain, for a sluggish wooden ferry to lug your car across Yaquina Bay. It sucked. So, McCullough used Great Depression-era Public Works Administration money to change that. He designed a 3,260-foot monster of steel and concrete. It was not just about utility. Look closely at the piers. You will see Art Deco obelisks and Gothic arches carved right into the concrete, details that most modern builders would dump to save a buck. McCullough believed public infrastructure should look like art. He got his way.
The bridge actually tells a story of sheer engineering guts. Its central span uses a massive 600-foot steel semi-through arch. It hangs high above the water. This was crucial. It let the tall timber ships pass underneath to reach the bustling ports inland. Two smaller 350-foot steel deck arches flank this main span, which then transition into five concrete deck arches on the south side. It is a masterclass in material transition. When workers finished the project in 1936, they did more than just pour concrete. They finally linked the entire Oregon Coast Highway, transforming isolated, struggling fishing villages into connected tourist hubs. The National Register listing from 2005 recognizes this exact pivot point. It marks the moment Oregon stopped relying on slow boats and fully embraced the modern automobile age.
