Sumner, Charles, Post #25, Grand Army of the Republic National Register of Historic Places Listing

History hides in plain sight. Walk down South Queen Street in Chestertown, Maryland, and you will find a simple, two-story wooden frame building that doesn't look like much at first glance. But this is the Charles Sumner Post #25. It is incredibly rare. Built in 1908, it served as a meeting place for Black Union Army veterans who fought in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. They survived the war. They came home to Maryland's Eastern Shore, but they still faced a deeply segregated society.

Black soldiers couldn't just join the local white veterans' groups. So they built their own. They named their post after Charles Sumner, the radical Massachusetts senator who fought tirelessly for abolition and civil rights before his death in 1874. This wasn't just a place to swap war stories over cheap whiskey. Actually, it was a lifeline. The veterans used the second floor for secret lodge meetings, hosted fish fries to pay for funerals, and organized emancipation day parades that marched right through the center of town. In a world that wanted them forgotten, they demanded visibility.

Most of these halls vanished. Rot, fire, and neglect swallowed them up over the last century. This Kent County building is one of the only African American Grand Army of the Republic halls left standing in the entire United States. Just one of a tiny handful. Local preservationists saved it from the wrecking ball in the early 2000s, leading to its placement on the National Register in 2005. Today, the plaster walls and old wooden floorboards don't just mark a spot on a map they hold the actual voices of men who wore the Union blue. Men who refused to be erased.
