Niagara Falls blocks shipping. For centuries, if you wanted to move beaver pelts or brass kettles from Lake Ontario toward the upper Great Lakes, you stopped at the Lower Landing in Lewiston. You had no choice. This spot marked the start of the grueling eight-mile portage road, a brutal climb up the 300-foot Niagara Escarpment where travelers lugged cargo on their backs. Seneca packers dominated this transit business for decades. They charged European traders hefty fees to haul trade goods, maintaining a lucrative monopoly on the water bypass until the British showed up with heavy machinery.

The 2003 boundary increase expanded the protected zone to safeguard what lies beneath the topsoil near modern-day Artpark. It is a messy graveyard of empires. Archaeologists found French lead seals, British military buttons from the 1760s, and Native American stone tools scattered across the old portage route. This wasn't just a road. It was a militarized choke point where the British built a wooden tramway system-essentially a series of log cradles pulled by ropes-to bypass manual labor and freeze out the Seneca haulers. That sparked a bloody rebellion. In 1763, Seneca warriors ambushed a British supply wagon train nearby at the Devil's Hole Massacre, killing dozens of soldiers to protest the loss of their packing jobs.

Today, you won't see towering stone castles or reconstructed forts on this specific patch of land, but the dirt preserves the physical friction of early America. It is mostly quiet woods now. Yet, by legally protecting these extra acres, historians saved the physical footprints of the soldiers, traders, and Native guides who fought over this narrow strip of dirt. Every broken pipe stem tells a story. The site serves as a grim reminder of how geography dictates history, turning a simple river landing into a theater of imperial greed.
