The packinghouses of Chicago's Back of the Yards smelled of blood and cheap coal in 1904. Immigrants crammed into tight tenements. They worked long, brutal shifts in the Union Stock Yards and had no green space to breathe. So, the South Park Commission stepped in. They hired the legendary Olmsted Brothers for landscaping and D.H. Burnham & Co. for the architecture. What they built at Davis Square wasn't just grass. It was social engineering. Before Davis Square, American parks were passive. Rich people rode carriages through them. But this new model changed everything by focusing on the physical and moral health of factory workers.
