This patch of Vermont woods sparked a revolution in how Americans view nature. It started with George Perkins Marsh. Marsh grew up on this Woodstock property in the early 1800s, watching loggers strip the steep hillsides bare for sheep pastures. He noticed something bad. Without trees, the soil washed away and the local streams dried up. So, in 1864, he published Man and Nature, a book that basically invented modern ecology. He warned that humanity was destroying the earth. People actually listened.

Then came Frederick Billings. A wealthy lawyer who made his fortune in the California Gold Rush, Billings bought the Marsh estate in 1869. He wanted to prove Marsh's theories right. So he replanted the bald hills. He imported thousands of European larches and Norway spruces to rebuild the forest, creating one of the earliest planned timber plantations in the country. He also established a model farm on the property, importing purebred Jersey cows to show locals how to farm sustainably without ruining the soil. It worked. The barren dirt turned back into rich, green terrain.

Later, Billings's granddaughter Mary French married Laurance Rockefeller. They kept the conservation experiment going. In 1992, they gave the whole 550-acre property, including the massive brick mansion, to the American public. It became Vermont's first national park. But it is not a wilderness park. Instead, it remains an active, working forest. You can still walk past the historic timber stands and hear the cows mooing at the adjacent farm. The park proves that humans can interact with nature without destroying it. A radical idea, even now.
